The humpback whale is one of the most common whale species in Iceland and many have heard of the famous song of the humpback whale. Below are three different sound examples recorded in Skjálfandi Bay. Possible mating calls. These calls are produced by a humpback whale and were recorded during mid-winter in Skjálfandi bay. These sound types are most likely mating calls since they are being produced when the reproduction hormones rise in the humpback whales. Many humpback whales that spend the summer in Iceland spend the winter on their breeding grounds in the West Indies.

This is the real deal. For an animal, the humpback whale is a pretty amazing musician. I'm glad I found this recording, as I had heard it first back in the 80's in a friend's collection. What makes me smile is that, if you watch the old movie LEGEND, with the unicorns and Tom Cruise, you'll hear the first track, "Solo Whale," being used as the voices of the unicorns. 3 people found this helpful.
Humpback whale song fit the bill perfectly. From high wails to deep growls to rhythmic scratches to tearful moans, it encompasses the full range of emotions in the longest song performed by any animal, a tune that can go on for nearly 24 hours at a time. People are often moved to tears on their first exposure to such intensity. Around the same time as the scientific publication hit the press, they were smart enough to release the original version of Songs Of The Humpback Whale, with a surprising White Album-style cover, which also included a 48-page booklet in English and Japanese detailing the dire situation many species of great whales faced. McVay took boxes of the albums to Japan, and when he played the whale music on radio and television, Japanese audiences were moved to tears.
Songs of the Humpback Whale (1992) is the debut novel of Jodi Picoult. It is about a woman who chooses to leave her emotionally abusive and distant husband behind in favor of driving across the country from San Diego, California to live with her brother in Massachusetts. Her teenage daughter chooses to come with her. Oliver, her husband, chooses to follow them in an attempt to save his family.
