Gene Ammons played the tenor sax with feeling and had a "big sax" approach rather than a feathery subdued sound. Like Stanley Turrentine, he didn't fall into the trite trap of grabbing for ultra-high notes any more than was necessary. There are nice melodic logical improvisations throughout. I like just about all of Ammons' releases and this is a particularly satisfying one. The fidelity on the CD is just fine to my ears. Definitely recommended as well as his other Prestige recordings. Listen to Jungle Strut and the hauntingly beautiful "Didn't We" and that 's almost the price of admission (listeners from Charleston, SC might remember "Didn't We" as the theme for Del Woods' "Jazz Interational" show on WPAL radio on Sunday nights). However, the version of "Son of a Preacher Man" bears litttle resemblance to the Dusty Springfield tune.
